Michael Alexander Robinson
We met up with Michael recently and had the opportunity to ask him some questions about acting and his career. Michael resides currently in Vancouver, Canada.
As a child, did you want to be an actor or did it fall into place through other activities?
Yes I wanted to be an actor since I was in grade 2. My brother asked me if I wanted to audition for his high school musical South Pacific and I ended up getting the part of little Jerome. My parents also took me to see a lot of broadway musicals such as Cats, Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera etc.
Who inspired you to follow your dream to pursue acting?
I don’t think anyone really inspired me. I just knew it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
What challenges have you faced in the entertainment industry? What has been your most rewarding experience?
Like many actors in the industry I have had to deal with rejection, not getting enough auditions or being seen for only small parts. My most rewarding experience has definitely been part of the ACTRA COOP, IRL the SERIES where I got to help with the creation process and play one of the leads. We won for Best Web Series at the 2017 LA FILM AWARDS.
What is your favourite type of character to play?
I am drawn to dark, complex characters. I market myself as an actor for syfy, thriller, fantasy and mystery type of genres.
What market do you currently work in? Are there other areas you would like to work?
Currently I reside in the Vancouver market. I made the move from Toronto in May and it has been a smart career move for me. I have a really good agent and I am auditioning for bigger parts here. I would love to work in the LA market one day but right now I am focussing on building a resume and making a name for myself in Canada first.
What advice would you give to someone new trying to make it in the acting industry?
Get as much training as possible before even consider approaching a Talent Agent. Build up a resume and demo reel by auditioning for student films, taking on-camera, scene study, Meisner, singing, dancing, stage combat, Second City classes etc. An actor needs to constantly train like an athlete so when that big audition comes up they are prepared and ready and not rusty.
